Why We Do What We Do

Altamirage’s RockCity Kitchen

Altamirage, Inc., also known as “RockCity Kitchen,”

A 510(c)(3) non-profit agency, partners with large properties in the metro Detroit area, to rescue nutritious prepared food and distribute the repacked meals to pantries, educational centers, and senior centers in the City of Detroit. We supervise a very small staff and many volunteers who use safe food handling procedures to repack the nutritious prepared food into one person and four-person container servings. Each container includes 50% protein, and 50% non-protein. Each pound is equivalent to a meal and today, RockCity Kitchen repacks 1,000 nutritious meals each day, on average. Our goal is to repack 3,000 meals each day.

What really turns us on is figuring out how to take large quantities of food that is difficult to move and not only move it but make it better in the process. It’s when the Chef of the largest convention center in our area calls and says that he has 2000 plated meals that are still hot in hot boxes can we come and get them and we always say of course, just keep them hot til we get there and we’ll handle the rest. It’s bringing in 80 people who want to volunteer and packing 20,000 (raw) chickens with veggies meal kit in an afternoon and putting it into households the very next day.
