Training made easy

Frequently asked questions.

ALL TRAINING

♦  Do I have to prepay to be signed-up?

We would prefer this but if you need to pay in class just email us. We aim to make this as easy for you as possible.

FOOD SAFETY TRAINING

♦  Which certificate do I need for the health department?
A Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate. The State of MI  / all health departments require each retail or foodservice operation to have a staff member certified in food safety on duty during all operating hours. Detroit no longer requires a foodhandler card of every staff member worker or volunteer.

We administer the ServSafe certificate. It is sponsored by the from the National Restaurant Association (NRA), although the State of MI / all health departments  accept several. Certificates are valid for 5 years, but some workplaces require re-certification every 3 years.

♦  Can I just take the CPFM test?
Sure. The state of MI / all health departments don’t require you attend training. But, unless you are re-certifying, work daily with this information, or are great at self-study, you’ll have a hard time.  Training is recommended – remember, you don’t know what you don’t know.

♦  Can I just take the HACCP test?
Sure. But if you understand the purpose and application of HACCP you would need and want the training.

♦  Do you have language training and tests?
We offer training in Spanish and Arabic, tests in Spanish or Chinese. We don’t charge extra for language training and tests, but sessions may take longer, and testing a separate session. As long as you can handle even a little bit of English we can train you at a slower pace.

♦  Do I have to take the test right after training?
Nope. See how you feel after training, and if you’re in zombie mode then call it a day and test another day.  Sometimes a break/rest/a good night’s sleep is the real key to passing and doing well. It is best to test when you feel great.

♦  How many times do I get to take the test?
You’ll have 2 tries in 30 days. Then, you’ll have to wait 2 months before your 3rd and final time. So, don’t take your first test unless you feel great because your second test really is your last shot. For this reason you may attend our training for free before you re-test.

♦  What if I just need to re-test?
Just make an appointment. However, you may attend our training for free before you retest.

♠  Already have an answer sheet or online test voucher?
Then we’ll take $25 off your proctor fee.

♦  What if I need a training on a day when there isn’t one scheduled?
We’ll run one for you. We’ll need 3 or more at one of our sites or 6 at your site. There is a travel fee of $25 per person, but it is waived for USFoods or customers with a total of 10+ in training – even of they represent different operations.

Agencies of Gleaners, Forgotten Harvest, Food Gatherers and other food banks and rescue groups – please see the Charity Feeder page.

♦  Do I have to have my own place to host a training?
No. We can source a site in your area.

♦  How long is training?
RockCity FoodSafety Review begins at 8am and testing at ~1pm.  At your site you set the hours.

♦  How long before I get my certificate?
At our site the same day if you give us a minute after class. At your site we’ll get yours into the mail the day or two after class.

♦  Can you send a copy of my certificate to my inspector?
Yes. When asked we can e-mail your inspector an electronic copy of your scanned certificate.

♦  I’m going to be “closed” – how fast can I get a certificate?
The certificate number – immediately. It is the number that the inspector records  and makes you officially certified.   In a week or so an electronic copy of your scanned certificate can be emailed, and in a few more days the hard copy to display for your next inspection.

SAFE ALCOHOL SERVER TRAINING

♦  Who has to have a safe alcohol server certificate?
At least one supervisor present when open and serving. This supervisor(s) present must have have received live  – and not online – training. Safe alcohol server certificates are valid for 3 years. Training from Personal Server Certification Corporation (PSCC) is not acceptable.

♦  Can I just take the alcohol server test?
No. The test must be given at the end of a live training session.
